It's because of two factors: 1) heat trapped by the stone and steel rises, creating turbulence and movement in the air above the city, and 2) in the presence of any breeze, the buildings create massive turbulence themselves- since the air on a flat plain tends to move in one direction (gently up, during the day from the heat rising off the land, or sideways in the wind)- there isn't all that much turbulence. Even on a breezy day, without tall irregular physical objects to create wind blocks, the air doesn't mix much, vertically.

With a lot of turbulence in the air, and air of differing temperatures mixing up there, the air is actively moving- when a cold air mass comes in above the turbulent air mass, and falls through it, it won't slice through the turbulent layer like a knife- it'll get mixed up and turbulent, too. Without a sharp thermocline (a meeting place between two masses where temperature is greatly different), you just get a downdraft, and a nasty thunderstorm.

With a sharp thermocline, the cold air mass shoves aside the warm air mass and slowly falls to earth. As it does this, and the world turns, it starts to rotate. Since air of differing temperatures doesn't mix without turbulence present, this makes a cone-shaped stormcloud, as the air will fall faster as it cools more- so the slow fall to earth speeds up as it gets closer to the ground, and the thermocline gets reshaped into a more conical shape. When the air THEN starts to mix more , and the thermocline breaks down, it's like having a gate opened- the energy released by these warm and cold air masses meeting suddenly gets dumped into the funnel-shaped air mass, and the tornado forms.

I agree on television. I came to this conclusion a couple of years ago, and I have really enjoyed watching television for the most part since. However, I suppose I grew up in the era of too much television, and I still find myself addicted to it, drawn in by its easy allure. Television in and of itself is not bad. If you notice, the title of the article does say "Tea Party" and nothing else, but it makes sense that others might call them teabaggers since that's what they called *themselves* for a while. And that's hysterical.

As far as others learning English as a second language, I'm not so concerned if they don't speak well. As far as people who haven't had certain opportunities for good schools, I'm not so concerned if they don't speak/write well. As far as people messing up privately, I'm not so concerned.

But it kills me when people attack others hatefully and set themselves up publicly as the perfect standard or the rightful American, and then act like buffoons. In that case, I get to point out their acts of idiocy in whatever ways they are demonstrated.

Arrgh! 2nd try... You know the worst part is that they print much more neatly than I do, yet can't spell for shit. I write like a 4-year old, but at least the spelling and syntax are there.

I do get on my wife about her poor English language skills, but as she says, she's not really interested in being an American.

I suppose that's the instinctive line that these folks are trying to define... being here, taking without contributing, vs. inclusive membership, dues-paying, if you will, in the society.

I am VERY hesitant to credit the authors of these awful signs with membership in the Tea Party. People with contrary perspectives are very prone to attempt to discredit the Tea Party movement by sandbagging. There are plenty of examples, unfortunately.

As for the hyperbolic labeling, name-calling isn't the exclusive behavior of Tea Party members. I can't remember the last time I heard the words "Tea Party" spoken by someone with a left-of-center political view. Rather, they substitute a crude name with an exclusively sexual connotation. Classy... and also sadly a great example of how lowbrow most of America has become on both sides of the fence.

Excuse the iffy writing... been a long time since I wrote something that didn't refer to maritime-y things.
